What is Dry Eye Syndrome?
The tear film is comprised of three distinct layers: the mucous layer, the aqueous or “watery” layer, and the lipid or “oily” layer. Each component is essential to maintaining the health of the eye. A disruption or abnormality in any one or more of these layers can cause a break down in the quality or quantity of tears, leading to Dry Eye Syndrome or Tear Film Insufficiency.
Evaporative Dry Eye: dysfunction of the meibomian glands cause decreased/poor quality oil secretion, which then causes tears to evaporate more rapidly.
Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye: an insufficient amount of water is produced by the lacrimal glands, which causes tear hyperosmolarity, an increase in salt to water ratio.
Blepharitis, inflammation of the eyelids caused by bacterial overgrowth, may also exacerbate symptoms.
If left untreated, severe or chronic Dry Eye may lead to serious complications such as increased risk of eye infection, permanent scarring, and/or vision loss.
