Tired of Glasses? Let’s try Contact Lenses!

Contact lenses offer a convenient alternative to glasses for many people, providing clear vision without altering your appearance. However, ensuring contact lens safety is crucial to prevent eye infections, discomfort, and long-term vision problems.

Before discussing safety tips, it’s important to understand the types of contact lenses available. The two main categories are:

  • Soft Contact Lenses: Made of soft, flexible material that allows oxygen to pass through to the cornea. They are comfortable and easy to adapt to. There are different types of lenses based on wear time and replacement schedule such as daily disposable lenses, bi-weekly, monthly, and extended wear lenses.

  • Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses: Made of durable, rigid material that allows oxygen to reach the eye. These lenses offer sharp vision and are typically more resistant to deposits. These work especially well with irregular corneas and specialty needs.

Importance of Proper Hygiene

  • Wash your hands: It is important to wash your hands with soap and water before handling your contact lenses.

  • Clean and Disinfect Lenses: If you are using reusable lenses, it is important to follow the proper cleaning instructions given to you by your eyecare provider.

  • Replace Lens Case Regularly: Lens cases can harbor bacteria. It is important to replace cases at least every three months and clean them regularly with contact lens solution after each use.

Proper Lens Handling and Storage

  • Avoid Sleeping in Contacts: Unless specifically prescribed by your optometrist, do not sleep in your contacts. Wearing contacts longer than directed can increase the risk of eye infection.

  • Follow the Replacement Schedule: Follow the replacement schedule for your lenses. Using contact lenses for more days than directed can lead to discomfort and infection.

  • Store Lenses Correctly: If not disposing daily, always store contact lenses in a clean case filled with fresh contact lens solution.

Avoid Environmental Hazards

Certain environmental factors can impact the safety and comfort of your contact lenses.

  • Swimming and Water Exposure: It is best to avoid wearing contact lenses while swimming, showering, or using a hot tub. Water can introduce harmful bacteria to your eyes.

  • Dust and Smoke: Being in dusty or smoky environments can cause discomfort or infections so it is best to wear protective eyewear to shield your lenses from harmful particles.

Recognizing and Addressing Problems

Even with the best care, contact lens related problems can occasionally arise. It’s crucial to recognize the signs of potential issues. If any of the following occur, remove the contact lenses immediately and contact your eye care provider:

  • Redness and Irritation

  • Light sensitivity

  • Pain

  • Blurry vision

  • Discharge or Tearing

Although contact lenses are convenient and effective for vision correction, they require proper care and attention to ensure safety. By following instructions from your doctor, you can enjoy the benefits of contact lenses while minimizing the risk of complications.
